The Electrical Detail Most Custom Homes Still Get Wrong: Outlets and Switches

Walk into a high-end custom home and you'll notice the obvious things first.

The countertops. The lighting. The cabinetry. The flooring. The furniture.

But there's another detail covering the walls throughout the entire house that most people don't think about until somebody gets it right:

the outlets and switches.

We were reminded of that this week while working in a beautiful custom home in Brookhaven, Georgia.

The home is less than a year old. It's modern, heavily designed and clearly wasn't put together by people making random decisions. The homeowners have been thoughtful about the colors, finishes and details in each room.

And yet there were still standard white electrical outlets throughout portions of the home.

There was nothing wrong with them electrically.

They just didn't belong.

In a Custom Home, the Electrical Devices Are Part of the Design

White outlets and switches have become so normal that most of us barely see them.

Until you put one against the wrong wall.

A bright white receptacle against a dark, carefully selected finish can suddenly become one of the most noticeable things in the room. Instead of disappearing into the design, it interrupts it.

That's what made this particular Brookhaven electrical project interesting.

The homeowners weren't calling The Fuse Crew because something had failed. They weren't dealing with a breaker that kept tripping or an outlet that had stopped working.

They wanted the electrical finishes to match the level of thought that had gone into the rest of their home.

So we replaced the white receptacles with black receptacles that worked much better with the surrounding finishes.

We also upgraded several of the switches with more modern, distinctive controls that fit the home's design better.

The electrical work itself wasn't some enormous renovation.

But visually?

It made sense immediately.

Sometimes the Best Electrical Upgrade Is the One You Barely Notice

I think homeowners sometimes approach electrical upgrades by asking, What can we add?

More recessed lighting. Another fixture. A smart-home feature. A new ceiling fan.

Those can all be worthwhile.

But there's another question worth asking:

What in this room is visually getting in the way?

Sometimes it's a white outlet sitting in the middle of a dark backsplash.

Sometimes it's an old toggle switch beside beautiful new cabinetry.

Sometimes the wall plates don't coordinate with anything else in the room.

And sometimes a home has been renovated extensively, but nobody ever went back and addressed the electrical devices that were already there.

Manufacturers make electrical devices and wallplates in a range of colors and styles for exactly this reason. Depending on the device, homeowners can choose finishes that coordinate with the surrounding room rather than defaulting automatically to white.

That doesn't mean every outlet in a house needs to become a design statement.

Usually, I'd argue the opposite.

The best choice is often the one that makes the electrical device less noticeable.

A Small Electrical Upgrade for a Brookhaven Custom Home

We've worked with these Brookhaven homeowners on several projects, so we already knew how much attention they pay to the details.

That's one of the things I like about working on homes like this.

The conversation isn't always about fixing something that's broken. Sometimes we're helping a homeowner get the last five percent of a room right.

That's what this project was.

The existing white devices worked. Replacing them wasn't about solving an electrical failure. It was about taking something ordinary and making it feel intentional.

Black receptacles against the right finishes don't scream for attention.

They do the opposite.

They stop screaming "outlet."

And that's the point.

Don't Forget the Switches

Switches deserve the same consideration.

There are far more options today than the traditional toggle switch most of us grew up with. Depending on the application, homeowners can consider rocker-style switches, dimmers, smart controls, fan controls, illuminated controls and different wallplate styles and colors.

But this is where I wouldn't recommend buying a pile of devices just because they look good online.

The control still has to be appropriate for what it's operating and for the electrical configuration behind it.

We'd rather look at what you have, understand what you're trying to accomplish and then determine what makes sense.

One Detail Can Change How Finished a Room Feels

This Brookhaven project reinforced something we've seen on other jobs:

Electrical work isn't always hidden behind the walls.

Some of it is sitting right in front of you every day.

If you've spent serious time and money choosing paint, wallpaper, countertops, cabinetry, lighting, hardware and furniture, it's worth looking around the room at the outlets and switches too.

You may be surprised how much those little white rectangles stand out once you actually notice them.

And fortunately, changing them can be a much smaller project than changing the rest of the room.

For this Brookhaven homeowner, black receptacles and upgraded switches were simply the right finishing touch.

Nothing dramatic.

Just one more detail that finally looked like it belonged there.
